About the course:

This course is ideal if you are enthusiastic about creative hairstyling and make-up and would like to work in the media or entertainment industry as a hair stylist or make-up artist. It is very hands-on and will allow you to express your imagination and creative skills to the limit.

You will develop the skills and knowledge to enable you to perform a range of professional beauty make-up treatments and techniques for clients in the industry and the basic skills in hairdressing and styling to enhance the make-up image.

What you will study:

  • Client consultation for hair services

  • Following health and safety practices in the salon

  • Client care and communication in the beauty related industries

  • Apply make-up

  • Provide eyelash and eyebrow treatments

  • Create an image based on a theme within the hair and beauty sector

  • The art of photographic make-up

  • Body art design

  • Plating and twisting hair

  • The art of dressing hair

  • Make and style hair additions

  • Themed face painting

  • Shampoo and condition hair

  • Nail art

Some units are delivered through distance learning and online support. We will ensure that your training fits your personal requirements. Candidates will be expected to work independently producing research material, photographic evidence and assignments.


  • You will be assessed through a range of practical assessment techniques, observations, assignments and online examinations

Entry requirements:

  • 3 GCSEs - grades A*-D (4 and above) including English and maths
  • OR Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector Level 1 Diploma - Merit or Distinction
  • Selection is by interview and internal tests

Costs and loans:

  • You will be expected to purchase your own course materials, hairdressing kit, uniform and text books

  • Hairdressing City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma
  • Beauty Therapy City & Guilds Diploma
