Ceramics - Introduction to Handbuilding

This course allows beginners to develop an understanding of clay and practise handbuilding skills. Principle methods of hand-built ceramics will be introduced, including slab-building, press-moulding, pinching and coiling. Surface decoration techniques with slip and glaze application will also be covered. Students are encouraged to combine techniques and explore ceramic form.

Ceramics Mixed Ability

A practical course to learn a variety of ceramic techniques, including pinching, coiling, press moulding, slabbing and throwing. You will be encouraged to keep a sketchbook of design ideas and drawings, notes and recorded results. Surface decoration at raw and bisque stages including use of slip colours, oxides and glazes will also be covered. You must bring your own apron and not arrive in your best clothes as you may get a little messy! Each session will finish with cleaning all tools and work areas used as required by health and safety

Ceramics Studio

Studio time provides you with a space to continue with your personal project. There is no formal teaching, but a tecnician is on attendance.

Ceramics Wheelthrowing All Levels

A practical course in which you will learn or further improve your wheel throwing skills. You will learn how to throw single, sets of functional forms i.e. bowls and progress to complex domestic pots, like jugs, cups, lidded jars, plates and teapots. All work will be decorated using a variety of surface decorations and glazes.

Ceramics Workshop

Join our workshop and work on your own projects under the supervision and creative support of your tutor!This is a mixed-level course; less experienced students can build up basic skills through a series of practical projects, covering pinching, coiling, slab construction, mould use, as well as an introduction to the potter’s wheel, whereas advanced learners can choose their own projects.

Ceramics Introduction to Pottery

During this course you will gain a basic technical and theoretical skills set in the use of ceramics. We will use pinching, coiling, slab construction and moulds to shape clay into three dimensional forms. Surface decoration including texture, the use of slips, oxides, as well as printing and glazing will also be covered.

Ceramics - Wheelthrowing (Beginners)

A practical course in which you will learn how to centre clay on the potter’s wheel and throw small bowls. Through independent practice and tutor-assisted exercises, you will learn the process of making mugs, lidded vessels, jugs and plates. You will learn how to finish the base of the pots with tools, how to carve and enhance surfaces, using glazing as a decorative technique.

Ceramics LDD

A friendly, accessible class for learners with mild to severe additional learning and their carers (if they attend the class with the student). You will learn a range of ceramic techniques such as pinching, coiling, press moulding and create decorative tiles, vessels and dishes. While some students will be able to work independently with tutor support, others will work with their personal support staff.

Ceramics Introduction to Surfaces and Forms

The course focuses on the wide field of ceramic surface decoration. You will gain a wide skill set through a series of tutor-led projects. We will create tiles, moulded dishes as well as more complex 3D forms and vessels. We will imprint and carve textured designs, explore printing painting and experiment with a range of mark making techniques using clay slips, oxides and stains. Basic Glazing techniques will also be covered.

Mosaics LDD

A friendly accessible class for learners with mild to severe additional learning and their carers (if they attend the class with the student) to develop social and practical skills. First you will develop your ideas on paper and then the tutor will help you turn your ideas into mosaic work. During the course you will learn how to create mosaics from broken tiles and old china.
