About the course:

This course is designed to help you develop the skills and knowledge for working in the early years sector. The range of units encourages a holistic view of child development and work experience to help develop the practical skills required for working with children. To work in the early years setting you need to be caring, responsible, good with children, patient, calm, efficient, energetic and creative.

What you will study:

  • Child development
  • Play in early years settings
  • Children’s physical and health care needs
  • Health and safety practice
  • Collaboration and communications with parents, colleagues and other professionals
  • Children’s communication and language needs
  • Supporting children’s personal, social and emotional development
  • Child protection


  • Assessment is by course work and assignments, which are both internally and externally assessed.
  • Mandatory Exam
  • Placement hours needed to be completed (350)

Entry requirements:

  • 5 GCSEs - grades A*-C / 9 - 4 including English and maths
  • OR  Children’s Care, Learning and Development Level 2 First Diploma - Merit or Distinction
  • Advanced DBS Clearance
  • Selection is by interview and internal tests
  • Good attendance

  • Children’s Play, Learning and Development Level 3 National Diploma
