About the course:

This course prepares you for assessment for Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) status if you are already employed as a teaching assistant. It will help you produce your portfolio of evidence to demonstrate you meet each of the HLTA standards.

The benefits of the HLTA status and the portfolio produced are that Head Teachers are able to show that their experienced support staff have undertaken training and shown commitment to developing their practice. Such factors are included within schools’ strategic planning and may form part of an action plan following an Ofsted inspection.

What you will study:

Four sessions:

  • Preparation and HLTA Analysis document mapped to standards
  • Professional dialogue with tutors and peers - individual tutorial to go through HLTA Analysis document
  • Observation at school and interview with Head Teacher
  • Presentation of HLTA Portfolio/Exit Tutorial


  • Individual tutorials
  • Observation of professional practice
  • Feedback and interview of Head Teacher
  • Presentation of HLTA portfolio seminar and individual exit tutorial

Entry requirements:

  • Letter from Head Teacher confirming current role in school
  • Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths
  • Level 3 qualifications or portfolio demonstrating minimum of 3 years’ experience as a Teaching Assistant

Moving forward:

  • Supporting Teaching and Learning Foundation Degree
  • Early Years Education Foundation Degree
