About the course

This course will provide you with a solid foundation for studying engineering at higher level within the College. It can also enable you to enter employment as a trainee or Apprentice.

What you will study

  • Health and safety in the workplace
  • Carrying out engineering activities efficiently and effectively
  • Using and communicating technical information
  • Making components using hand tools
  • Fitting techniques
  • Using a lathe
  • Producing CAD models and drawings
  • Assembling, iring and testing electrical equipment and circuits
  • English, maths, science and IT


  • Assessment is by observation of practical activities taking the form of a series of assignments developed in the respective practical workshops and written assignments for each unit

Entry requirements

  • 4 GCSEs - grades A*-D / 9 - 3 including English and maths
  • OR Performing Engineering Operations L1 NVQ Diploma - Merit or Distinction
  • Selection is by interview and internal tests
