Four of our Hospitality, Food and Enterprise students were put through their paces yesterday at top coffee house, Gather & Gather in Lloyds Bank Plc, Central London.

Harrison, Bettina, Heather and Dylan  were invited to undertake a Barista Training Day with coffee trainer Annagh Butler, who shared her wide knowledge and love of all things coffee.

The day was split into four parts, with the first focusing on how coffee is grown and the various regions it comes from. Espresso Basics were then explained, including the importance of the grinder and temperature of the water.

Next came the Milk Science, which including perfect pouring techniques. And then finally, the practical side of making expert coffee was explained, focusing on customer service and pulling that perfect espresso.

The students were able to help Annagh during the lunchtime rush and get real-life experience of working as a Barista. All four of them were also awarded their Level 1 certificate in Barista Skills.

Having completed the day’s training, Level 3 Front-of-House Apprentice, Harrison said: “I really enjoyed the experience today. It was very interesting to learn more about coffee as well as be taught to make the perfect cup. I am looking forward to sharing my new skills with my classmates and testing them out on our customers in BR6 Restaurant!”

Deputy Front of House Manager at BR6, Stephanie Robertson, added: “The students did really well today and absolutely loved the experience. They can now make a variety of coffees with simple latte art, as well being able to advise customers on different types of coffee.

“Being taught new skills by experts is a great advantage for our students. And these skills will be put to great use in BR6 Restaurant! “
