This course is designed for learners who want to work directly with young people aged 11–25 in youth, community and voluntary sector settings. It provides the minimum qualification required to work as a JNC-recognised Youth or Community Support Worker Assistant, supporting qualified practitioners in the delivery of youth work activities.

You will develop the practical skills, knowledge and professional behaviours needed to engage young people safely, inclusively and effectively. The course combines classroom learning with real-world youth work practice, enabling you to apply what you learn in a work-based setting.

    You will study a range of core units that reflect the realities of youth work practice, including:

    • Engaging and communicating with young people
    • Safeguarding in a youth work setting
    • Theory and principles of youth work
    • Young people’s development
    • Group work in youth work settings
    • Reflective practice and professional development
    • Supporting behaviour that may challenge
    • Work-based practice in youth work

  • Entry Requirements
    • A genuine interest in working with young people
    • Willingness to engage with safeguarding and professional practice
    • 4 GCSEs at grades 9-3 (A*-D) (English and maths desirable) or a Level 1 qualification. Students will also need an advanced DBS clearance, and final selection is by interview and internal tests
    • An initial assessment will be carried out to ensure the course is appropriate for you
  • Assessment

    There are no exams on this course.

    Assessment is internally assessed and based on a portfolio of evidence, which may include:

    • Case studies
    • Practical activities and observations
    • Written or recorded reflections
    • Reports linked to work-based practice

    All units are graded Pass/Fail.

  • Moving Forward

    On successful completion, you can progress to:

    • Level 3 Certificate or Diploma in Youth Work Practice
    • Further study in related areas such as Health & Social Care or Community Development
    • Entry-level roles or volunteering within youth and community services
  • Duration

    1 year

  • Learning and Teaching

    As part of this qualification, you must complete a minimum of 40 hours of work experience in a youth work setting.

    • Develop confidence and professional skills
    • Gather evidence for your assessed portfolio
    • Support is provided to help you identify a suitable placement where needed.
